As an alternative to total demolition of the existing rest and care home, the design proposes selective demolition. The existing building is stripped of inferior additions. The central, slightly curved wing will be preserved. The extension will be grafted onto it.

Two new volumes will be built against the central volume. In the middle, the building is raised. The resulting S-shaped plan meanders through the forest, seeking views and sunlight.

The open stairwells enjoy natural light and touch spacious terraces so that encounters between residents occur in a relaxed manner. In the building's plinth, collective spaces enhance the residential community.

Slender building

Compact construction is preferred over non-compact construction from an energy perspective. Limiting the heat loss surface leads to more efficient buildings but also excludes slender buildings. Buildings are increasingly becoming ‘blocky’.

By removing inferior extensions from the central building, an exceptionally slender volume is created with a facade-to-facade distance of approximately eight metres, approximately four metres less than usual.

The quality of living that is created in this way is unseen. The sun literally shines through the homes. The rooms are bathed in light everywhere. An intense contact with nature is possible over the length of the home. The project forms an alternative to individual living in the ‘green’ periphery.
