Urban living today
The site of Antwerp’s former slaughterhouse is being transformed into a new mixed-use district in accordance with a masterplan by Desmet Vermeulen and Palmbout. On the western side, a new park is being created, known as the Kalverwei, which will be surrounded by new and existing buildings and will form the link between the existing neighbourhood and the new developments on the site. The masterplan provides for three ‘park residences’ on the edge of the park. ATAMA designed a U-shaped layout for the central residence, based on London’s mansion blocks, which on the one hand provides a backdrop to the park and on the other presents a welcoming façade to the new street.

An open, publicly accessible outdoor space is enclosed, providing room for the planting of a standard tree, beneath which a semi-circular bench offers passers-by a place to rest. The front doors are reached via this small square, walking past the tree. Two communal spaces on the corner enliven this central spot in the street. The sturdy block features a plinth in exposed concrete, a solid brick body and a light crown in galvanised steel with a gently sloping roof. Generous terraces on the park side and the street side ensure that this is a good place to live in the city.
